The acapella for this tune was the first one I ever made by using phase inversion on the instrumental track and adding to the complete track. However, I never found a suitable use for it.
Recently I got the Editors track, complete with an instrumental. A very good rock tune that I immediately liked, and the only acapella that fitted was this Robbie Williams tune. Robbie always sounds better with a good rock backing.
So here it is:
Sin Race:
Editors - Rat Race (instrumental)
vs
Robbie Williams - Sin Sin Sin (acapella)

Video for Slow Martian Nasty Girl
Inspired by a comment that this mashup of mine could have been an imaginary love theme from Star Trek where Captain Kirk rejects a green skinned alien I got inspired again to make a video for this.
This is entirely new territory for me.
The video contains elements from Mars Attacks, Star Trek and Kylie Minogue

The Vinyl Frontier: Mashups from Outer Space
New for BBI releases is that this is the first album that was reviewed by a prerelease team so that the overall quality of the album could be raised before final release.
The album has an excellent flow and feels like those old concept albums, which is quite an achievement considering that all contributors where working separately on their tracks, proving that the use of this pre-release team succeeded in creating a homogenic album, instead of a collection of loosely themed, but separate tracks.
The album has been mastered by Celebrity Murder Party and he did a fine job on that.
Everyone who has an interest in spacey songs and soundscapes should give this album a listen.
Track listing:
Side A
01. Virtual DJ - Eve of a problem
02. CMP - Intergalactic Predator
03. Virtual DJ - Slow Martian Nasty Girl
04. Viper Pilot - Ballad of the colonial Roughnecks
05. Juxtaposeur - Space Dictation
06. Guv'nor - That Chewie Tune
07. DJ Le Clown - 200
Side B

11. DJ Useo vs Celebrity Murder Party - Love Rocket

edit 09-09-2010: The album is not available anymore on it's original location.
You can find the first 12 tunes here as a rar file (126 MB, mediafire link)
Tracks 13 and 14 can be found in a separate rar file here

Two Summer Tunes
With the summer not really getting in full swing I decided to make some summer tracks. One new, and one which was featured on the summer booty compilation a while ago.
The new one:
Who's Your Liar:
Beyonce & Shakira - Beautiful Liar (spanglish version)
vs
Daddy Yankee - Who's Your Daddy
(click on the divshare logo to download the mp3)
I made this one for my wife who's totally into reggaeton and Beyonce and Shakira
The old one (though remastered, the vocal should be better in the mix and a recurring click at the end has been removed)
Drop It Like It's Chichi:
Snoop Dogg: Drop It Like It's Hot
vs
Chichi Peralta - Un Día Más
Both tracks have some imperfections but I think are still enjoyable, it's up to you to decide.

My Silent Love (Akira Yamaoka vs Lionel Richie & Diana Ross)
Akira Yamaoka is the composer of the splendid soundtracks of the Silent Hill computer games. I really love his music and always wanted to do something with it.
Silent Hill is well known for it's brutal and horrific imagery and creepy atmosphere so you might be surprised that I combined this with Lionel Richie & Diana Ross.
The file below is the tweaked version. The old one has been deleted.
My Silent Love:
Akira Yamaoka - Room of Angel (from Silent Hill 4 - The Room)
vs
Lionel Richie and Diana Ross - My Endless Love

Call Me The Beginning Of The End (Blondie vs Nine Inch Nails)
Recently I am listening to a lot of noisy music so it did not come as a surprise that I resorted to use Nine Inch Nails in my latest mashup blended with an eighties track of Blondie. Of course it also helps that NIN has published all separate tracks of several songs of their latest album Year Zero. Also Mr Bush makes a cameo appearance.
So here it is:
Blondie - Call Me

Nine Inch Nails - The Beginning Of The End

Bootwerk: a bastard pop tribute to Kraftwerk
(artwork by Simon Iddol)
A while ago I had made a track for the Red Hot Chili Peppers mashup competition at mashuptown.com featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Eyed Peas, Public Enemy and Kraftwerk.
Apparently this got noticed by Mashup Industries who where working on a Kraftwerk bootleggers album and I was asked if this track could be included in their project. Needless to say I was very honoured by the request and even more when I got to know who the other contributors were, like DJ Zebra, Dunproofin', Divide & Kreate and more excellent mashup artists.
The album has arrived, it's a stunning compilation and I'm proud to be included in this album together with some of my bootlegger heroes in a tribute to one of my all-time musical heroes.
You can get the full album, all individual tracks and the artwork at the site of Mashup Industries
(You can get my track by scrolling down, but i recommend to get all the tracks)

Bring It On Pussy (Grinderman vs Goose)
This mashup is almost entirely the opposite from the previous one which was mainly acoustic. It's noisy, loud, dirty and sleazy.

Enemy Humps Non Stop
to download the mp3 click the divshare logo
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Humpdebump (instrumental)
Black Eyed Peas - My Humps (instrumental)
Kraftwerk - Music Non Stop (instrumental/voice)
Public Enemy - Public Enemy Number One (voice)
This mashup is my entry for the mashup town Red Hot Chilly Peppers mashup competition.
I just had to try if Humpdebump would mix with My Humps from the Black Eyed Peas, just for the similarity in the titles. When it did I thought about Kraftwerk's Music Non Stop as a track that sounds quite funky, what I associate with the RHCP as well, so that was the next layer. I had an all instrumental mashup ready, but them decided to add a voice as well and that was to become from Public Enemy.
(26 may, replaced the original post with a new one rendered at a higher bitrate and a minor tweak)

Summer Booty Compilation by Beat-Boot-Ique
A few weeks ago I was invited by the people behind Beat-Boot-Ique to join their mash-up community. Beat-Boot-Ique (BBI) is a new startup in the mashup world that focuses on theme based compilations featuring mashups.
The latest theme was the summer and I contributed one track to it, Drop It Like It's Chichi - Snoop Dogg vs Chichi Peralta. (On volume 3)
I am quite proud to be part of this together with such fine mashers as for example Copycat, Voicedude, Norwegian Recycling, Morgoth: a nice blend of the "arrived" mashers and the new and upcoming talent.
Yesterday this soundtrack of the summer went online: 3 hours, 41 tracks and 28 dj's bringing you that summer vibe. Needless to say that I warmly recommend this, so grab it here
On this place I also want to thank DJ Useo and Toss for organizing the whole project and all contributors for the fine tracks and artwork.

First Steps
After listening and searching for mash ups I got interested and was wondering how people made these and if it was possible to do this myself.
I do not have any DJ-experience but in the eighties made my own projects, sometimes mixing in with looping tapes as well (those were the days). I was a proud possessor of a sampler, a Yamaha MSX computer (32K memory!) with a build in DX9 FM synthesizer and step sequencer, a basic Roland drum computer and later an Atari ST 1040.
Somewhere in the 90's I started living and working in Latin America for seven years, always on the move and simply had no opportunity anymore to make my own music.
The whole mash-up craze relighted my fire to do anything with music.
So, here are my first five after toying around with some software for about six weeks.
In order of creation:
1. 1 Sledgehammer
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer vs Amerie - 1 Thing
When still experimenting with my new tools I was already thinking to do something with Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer. I stumbled on the combination with Amerie's 1 thing and noticed that this could be a successful combination.
2.Slave To Love U Baby
Donna Summer - Love to Love You Baby vs Britney Spears -Slave 4 U
Immediately I wanted to follow up and thought Donna Summer's I Feel Love would be an easy one to mash but out of curiosity I decided to listen again to Love To Love You Baby instead . When I heard it I knew that that would be a lot more interesting to do and here is the result.
3.Love Or Hate Perfect Fashion
David Bowie - Fashion vs Princess Superstar - Perfect vs Lady Sovereign - Love Me Or Hate Me
Then I was messing with Fashion by David Bowie but did not know with what to combine, I chose an easy way out and combined this with two rap acapella's ( I could not chose so decided to use both) by Lady Sovereign and Princess Superstar. I had my doubts because it was a bit of an 'easy' mash-up, but I got carried away and decided to finish it.
4. Country Hocus Pocus
Nelly - Country Grammar vs Focus - Hocus Pocus
I was searching for a good guitar riff to use for my next mash up, even searching on the web if there are lists of the best guitar riffs ever to get inspiration (there are), but then thought about the dutch group Focus that had a song with a good riff, which as far as I knew had not been used yet.
Having the riff, I needed something to combine this with, I searched my small collection of acapella's and came up with Nelly's Country Grammar but sped up quite a lot.
I did not even know the original song otherwise I probably would not even haven thought about doing this. The result is that fast paced rapping Nelly.
It's a pity that the acapella I have is a bit distorted in the verses which only gets worse by speeding it up. I first tried to cover this up by heavy filtering and delay but that sounded cluttered. So I stuck to this one, it has some flaws but the result I still like so much that I decided to post this. Hopefuly one day I wil find a better acapella.

5.Independent Peter
Destiny's Child - Independent Women vs Duane Eddy - Peter Gunn vs Talking Heads - Seen and not Seen vs Perfecto All Stars - Papa's Got A Brand New Pig Bag
It sounds so simple but this one took me quite some time to complete. To keep the song interesting I tried many variations on the basic concept (which was DC and Duane Eddy) and finally after getting the idea to use a kind of drum roll when the sax blows its tune the pieces fell into place. I still have the feeling that it can be better and would like to hear your opinions.
