Give My Tears Some Shelter (Rolling Stones vs Amy Winehouse)

Another mashup using an Amy Winehouse instrumental, though it could have been named a Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrel instrumental as well, because the music from Tears Dry On Their Own is actually Ain't No Mountain High Enough, written by Ashford & Simpson.

Give My Tears Some Shelter

Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter (vocals and guitars)
Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry On Their Own (instrumental)

EDIT 17/10 Well, after writing this still some timing issues were not completely resolved, but my computer broke down. Fortunately Voicedude who was a tremendous help in tweaking earlier versions offered to rebuild and retweak it so here is the link to his improved version:

WAR OF CONFUSION (video)

In March I released a mashup made with music of germany's 80's popgroup
Propaganda and vocals of The Temptations, Edwin Starr and Nas, which
was well received.

The lyrics of the song Ball of Confusion, by The Temptations,
though more than 30 years old seem as relevant today as they were
then and conjured up a lot of imagery when listening to it.

After viewing Godfrey Reggio's Naqoyqatsi, loosely translated as 'Life

as War' an idea started to form that his use of imagery and editing
and the subject matter would well fit with this audiomashup of mine.

To get the idea was easy, to execute it was a different matter.
I had no experience with video editing except the very basics and
what I wanted to achieve would definitely need more than that.

It took countless hours of experimenting and searching for
materials, watching hours and hours of documentaries of which some
were really gruesome to see and for about 3 months I was solely
dedicated to bring this project to fruition.

Do I have a political agenda with this video?
No, but like any sane person I am disgusted by the atrocities and
accompanying cynicism that occurs on our planet. And we grow indifferent to many of the news about it. I hope this video shows that wars, neglect, famine, etc are no trivial matters at all and definitely not glamorous.

A lot of the material used is from the USA, my video is not
specifically targeted against the USA, it's simply that there is lot
more media coverage from there to be found.

At the end of the video a creditroll with all sources is listed.

Special thanks to DJ Not-I for kindly previewing the video and
giving helpful suggestions and my wife who had to endure viewing
this over and over again.

In Case You're Wondering

In case you're wondering why I haven't posted anything new the last 2 months, the reason is that I am working already about 2 months on an elaborate video for my mashup War of Confusion.
I expect to finish this somewhere in September, it's the most complicated and ambitious mashup related thing I have done until now. Here are some screenshots from the still unfinished video to get an idea:

3 Summer Mashes

Last year one of my first mashups was included on BBI's Summer Booty compilation and since the demise of BBI the original producers went their own separate ways resulting this year in 2 albums:
DJ Useo presents Summer Booty 2008 and the Summer Booty album by Sound Unsound Network.
I made a track for each album and they have been available already for some time but not yet on my own site.
So here they are and a brand new one as well. (direct links below)

Thievery Corporation - Lebanese Blonde (instrumental)

Electroswamp - Talking Heads vs Goldfrapp

When I was listening to Ooh La La by Goldfrapp I thought that the chorus could probably match very well with the chorus in the Talking Heads song Swamp.
What I did not expect was that the two songs would match entirely so well.

In my opinion Swamp is one of the weaker Talking Heads' songs, but in this combo I like it a lot.

Electroswamp:

Talking Heads - Swamp (from Stop Making Sense)
Goldfrapp - Ooh La La (extended remix and Phones re-edit)

Summer Booties 2008

Last year BBI released the album Summer Booty, a 3 CD monster collection of tunes around a summer theme. This was the first album I was featured on, the album was a huge succes, even though (or maybe because) not all tracks were flawless. I think it worked as a kind of jumpstart for a lot of mashup-artists who were just starting or not very well known and were featured along arrived bootleggers.
This year there will be two Summer Booty albums, due to some differences of opinion between the facilitators of the first edition. The first one has just arrived, DJ Useo presents Summer Booty 2008 and features one track of mine:

Lebanese Thieves Don't Lie
Shakira - Hips Don't Lie (vocals)
Thievery Corporation - Lebanese Blonde (instrumental)

It's on my myspace player but not yet available for download. You can download it by going to the summerbooty site

Soon Sound UnSound Network (The successor of BBI) will present their Summer Booty compilation as well on which I also will be featured.

So even though this little quarrel might have stirred some rivalry the bootleg afficonados ultimately profit by having more to listen to.
For the record, both sides have laid down their quarrel and are in support of each others product.

Mistah Pok's video to Psycho Robots

A while ago after I had made the mashup with Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads and Robots by Kraftwerk, Mistah Pok made a video to this, which you can see here. I recommend to take a look at his My Space profile, he has lots of excellent videos.

What Goes Around In A Hurt World (Madonna vs Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake)

I made this quite some time ago, but never came to finish it completely, when other projects took over. I am not entirely sure about this one, it seems alright to me but also very regular as if it misses something. Maybe I have heard it too much already. So I did finish it and you can make up your mind about this one.

What Goes Around In A Hurt World
Madonna - Drowned World/Substitute For Love (instrumental)
Justin Timberlake - What Goes Around (acapella)
Christina Aguilera - Hurt (acapella)

Dexter wants to love you (Bob Marley vs Theme from Dexter)

This is just a little tune I made for Gybo's TV Tunes challenge.
It's the main title from the television series Dexter, about a serial killer with a conscience (composed by Rolfe Kent) vs Bob Marley's Is This Love.

War Of Confusion (Propaganda vs The Temptations, Edwin Starr and Nas)

The idea for this mashup started when a multiply contact posted a long mix of Propaganda tracks.
I thought Ball of Confusion by the Temptations would match well with this. Then, to get along with the subject matter, War by Edin Starr was added and One Mic by Nas.
The only problem is that I do not have the dirty pella by Nas, so I extracted the muted words from the original but the difference in sound is noticable, (fortunately it's only in the second verse) which I then tried to mask with sounds effect, from the track by Paul Hardcastle - 19.
(Thanks to dj prince for the samplepack).
If anyone has the original pella by Nas, I would like to redo this, because it's still bothering me a bit.
It turned out to be my longest mashup up ever, clocking in at 8:41.

edit 24 Mar: I have added a short version (5 min) today as well

War of Confusion

Propaganda - P-Machinery (Beta mix and album version)
Temptations - Ball of Confusion
Edwin Starr - War
Nas - One Mic
and some sound samples from the track 19 by Paul Hardcastle

2 Mashups with the Balanescu Quartet covering Kraftwerk

Since Popmusic is a lot about recycling and mashups are the ultimate recycled music it is just a matter of time before covers of mashups will appear.
I don’t know if a cover of a mashup has been made before but here it is.

I was wondering how KrazyBen’s splendid mashup of Kraftwerk and Timbaland, ‘’The Way Models Are’’ (from last year) would sound if the original Kraftwerk backing track would be replaced by the cover The Balanescu Quartet made of The Model.

Lately, when working on my Psycho Robots track, this thought got into my mind again and so I decided to just try it for fun’s sake.

The result was pleasingly enough to me and I decided to give this a go.

Because I considered it a bit lame to post only this track I also went searching into material that would fit with another of the Kraftwerk covers by this quartet.

In the end I settled with Shakira’s Whenever, Wherever with backing of Computer Love by the Balanescu Quartet.
Timing wasn’t easy, the backing track slowed down considerably in the middle section and Shakira started to get overstretched too much,. So after a lot of rearranging parts and snippets I think I succeeded.

So here they are:

Whenever, Wherever Computer Love:
Shakira – Whenever, Wherever
vs
The Balanescu Quartet – Computer Love
(warning: long intro)

&

The Way I Model:
Timbaland – The Way I Are
vs
The Balanescu Quartet – The Model
(based on KrazyBen’s mashup The Way Models Are)

Empty Islands - Supremes vs Madredeus vs Cardigans

This mashup is in total contrast with the former. This Supremes' track always had a very melancholic mood, but you still dance on the the backing track. I have tried to enhance on the mood of the lyrics by using an instrumental track of the portuguese Madredeus and snippets of Lovefool by the Cardigans

Empty Islands
Supremes - My World Is Empty Without You
Madredeus - As Ilhas dos Açores
Cardigans - Lovefool

I Put A Spell On Your Ideals - Diamanda Galas vs Digitalism

When I was working on a Halloween track some months ago I was rediscovering Diamanda Galas. For those who do not know her, she has a voice that penetrates your spine and is definitely not your average top 40 singer. For that Halloween work I had used a small bit of her version of I Put A Spell On You. To use the whole track I needed something that sounded a bit dirty and nasty and I think this Digitalism track complements her vocals.

I Put A Spell On Your Ideals:
Diamanda Galas - I Put A Spell On You
vs
Digitalism - Idealistic
